the pass is vital if you want to get to the other side of the map. As for the decorations, its basically a former Tau village that got sacked by the orks, however because of how annoying advancing is in the cliff's, the defenders gave the civilians more then enough time to evacuate, along with evacuation for the remaining defenders.
