If you receive a shared quest from a party member or an item that starts a quest, the name and location are meaningless as is the zone, but they are stored anyway.
When a quest is accepted, the NPC's name, zone and map coordinates are stored in a table. As long as that quest remains in your Blizzard Quest Log the information is retained. When a quest is completed it's information is purged from the table when s
