After a long night's work and frequent internet outages, I present the first of a new series called Worn.
I had the idea to age TF2's items, and am probably not the first. But I wanted to give items a worn and used (and abused) appearance. I started out by downloading some patterns for things like scratched metal, wood, etc. After some fiddling around and testing in-game I found that it would look very un-tf2 like, so I scrapped that. I little bit more fiddly-bobs got me what you see above! The render took so long, but I love making the renders.
I spent probably thirty minutes or more just messing around with bots and host_timescale. You should seriously load up itemtest (or whatever), turn on cheats, and change that timescale. Anything under 1 is slower, above is faster (Don't go past 45!). Very distracting while, say, trying to skin a model.
I'd love to hear some feedback on what you think, and also a side question, how do you categorize these textures? The texture class and model class confuse me every time, =P. An explanation would help me out a lot =)
What would you like to see worn next?
